Darien Grand List Grows 1% To $8.3 Billion

DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien Grand List of taxable property for 2014 grew by $80.5 million to $8,365,999,834, according to the Tax Assessor’s Office.

The growth represents a 1 percent increase over the previous year, which had seen a 7 percent decrease over the 2012 Grand List. The Grand List reflects 70 percent of the assessed value of all real estate, motor vehicles and personal property in Darien as of Oct. 1, 2014.

The assessments on the Grand List were compiled by the office of Tax Assessor Anthony Homicki and are used to calculate property taxes for the 2015-16 fiscal year.

Real estate makes up the bulk of the Grand List, and increased $75,810,130 in 2014 to $7,962,750,500. This is based on the assessed value of 6,531 residential units, 292 commercial units, four industrial units, one public utility, 222 vacant land properties and two apartment units.

Motor vehicle assessments increased $4,392,964 in 2014 to $237,377,760.  There are 15,095 passenger vehicles in town, 186 commercial vehicles, 807 combination vehicles, three farm vehicles and 1,605 other vehicles.

Personal property increased $1,698,260 to $168,385,820 in 2014. Personal property is comprised of a number of different categories, including non-registered motor vehicles, machinery, farm equipment, furniture, data processing and telecommunications equipment and horses.

There were 1,058 exemptions granted in 2014, totaling $2,514,246. The majority of these exemptions were given to veterans.
